North Carolina Non-Public Schools Testing Service

The Center for Urban Affairs and Community Services provides access to secure state test materials to non-public schools through the Non-Public Schools Testing Program (NPSTS). This program is sanctioned by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and is operated on a cost recovery basis.

Testing Requirements

Testing requirements for non-public schools, written by the director of the NC Division of Non-Public Education, outlines the testing requirements for non-public schools. For more detailed information about policies governing non-public and home schools contact the N.C. Division of Non Public Education. Information about the North Carolina Public Schools, including the 2005-2006 North Carolina Testing Program Required Tests and Testing Calendars, can be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

Testing Security

The Non-Public Testing Service takes test security very seriously. It is the responsibility of all participants in the program to fully understand and abide by the rules and regulations established by the North Carolina Department of Public Instructions. Information regarding test security can be found in the Testing Code of Ethics and in other publications distributed to participants. Test security will be fully explained at the required training sessions.

If you will be testing students using accommodations, you will need to submit the NPSTS Testing Students with Accommodations (new version coming soon) form prior to administering the test. For information about using accommodations, refer to the appropriate Test Administrator’s Manual and to the Testing Students with Disabilities document.

Information About The Tests

Student Handbooks are available for Computer Skills and Competency to assist you in preparing your students for these tests. They are available on line. (wherever this site is at DPI).

Competency (student entered grade 9 for the first time in 1994-1995 through 2000-2001)

EOG Tests: Understanding Your Child's End-of-Grade Test (Grade 3-5 and Grades 6-8) contains useful information for parents and students.

Calculators: Please check your Test Administrators Manual for specifics about which type of calculator may be used on certain tests. This chart should help you make that determination.
